"The Holy Spirit abides with us always, he is always within us, in our hearts." (Pope Francis - Instagram on Pentecost Sunday)

“The Holy Spirit abides with us always, he is always within us, in our hearts.” (Pope Francis – Instagram on Pentecost Sunday) Pope Francis “I want to walk with you along the way of God’s mercy and tenderness.” (Official Account. Copyright L’Osservatore Romano.)

This past weekend, I attended a press conference to help save a Sacred American site in Virginia called Belmead.  It is a 2,200 acre piece of land along 2.5 miles of the James River, and it is where St. Katharine Drexel built her first schools, St. Francis de Sales & St. Emma, that went on to teach 15,000 African-American children.  The land is owned by the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament who recently announced they were selling the property.  A press conference was organized to help bring more attention to this amazing piece of land, that has a rich history including Native American tribal grounds, slave plantation, schools, and now ministries and community services offered by the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament and Francis-Emma, Inc. (non-profit support group for Belmead).

I would urge you to please sign the online petition to urge the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament to reconsider their rushed decision, as better solutions can be found to save the property and still benefit the sisters.  Please say a prayer for the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament as they struggle with finances and declining vocations.  We need the spirit of St. Katherine and her mission to help those who were poor and neglected in society, and this site still has potential to do more if given the support it needs.   Please visit the new Museum at Belmead and check out this inspiring sacred site — the sisters only know now that they are there until December 2016 — unless things change…

Sacred Site in Peril – Help Save an American Treasure

May 15, 2016 by John Clem 2 Comments

The Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament recently made the announcement to sell their 2,200 acre property in Powhatan, Virginia.  The Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament had been restoring the property and offering new ministries over the past ten years after establishing their 501c3 non-profit called Francis-Emma, Inc.  In April, the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament in Philadelphia, made a decision to sell the property and dissolve the Francis-Emma, Inc., in addition to selling their Mother House in Bensalem, PA.    This news came as a complete surprise to the Board of Francis-Emma, Inc., who organized a press conference on Saturday, May 14th at Belmead.

Press Conference — Belmead/St. Francis de Sales/St. Emma in Peril

Former Board of Directors Board Chairwoman, Jennie A. Shuklis - speaking at press conference and requesting your help.

Former Board Chairwoman of Francis-Emma, Inc., Jennie A. Shuklis – speaking at press conference and requesting your help to sign petition and write letters.

The former Board of Directors of Francis-Emma, Inc., Jennie Shuklis, called the community, alumni, and press to ask for a call to action to help save this Sacred American site.  This amazing piece of land holds the American History of Native Americans, African-Americans during slavery and The Civil War, the sacred site of Saint Katherine Drexel’s first schools, a rich ecology, and now home to a museum, preschool, and many ministries serving the community.  The sisters also lease to local businesses which include a very active stable and riding clubs for horses.

Many  people came to support the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament and Francis-Emma, Inc. to see if there is a way forward to change the decision of the sale, and find a new solution to save the Belmead property.  An online petition has been organized and urge you to sign this petition being made to the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament.  At this time, the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament will be at the site and continuing to run their ministries until December 2016, and they currently do not know of future plans for the land or buildings.

NOTE:  Francis-Emma, Inc. has been dissolved and not currently able to take donations.

Please also read my two previous stories about Francis-Emma and the new museum, and I urge you to visit this wonderful treasure of our church.

Today marks the 5 year anniversary of the Call To Holiness Blog.  Thank you for all the support and feedback from my readers over the past five years.  This blog has been a source of inspiration to deepen my faith, and I enjoy sharing the stories that I come across in Catholic and Secular Media that often do not get as much attention in Main Stream Media, and help to tell a more complete picture of an important news item.

This coming June, I will be attending the Quenquinnial (5-year) meeting of the Secular Franciscan Family in St. Louis, and am looking forward to sharing photos and stories in Call To Holiness.  Thanks to all the great Catholic Media outlets who help to bring a more complete and truthful dialog to news and teaching the faith.  Special thanks to the 24,000 readers over the past year at Call To Holiness.

Pax Et Bonum,

John

Prayer of Praise and Thanks
